 

#  Gita Gopinath Appointed as Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund

 As reported in [The Harvard Crimson](https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2018/10/2/gopinath-appointed-to-imf/), Economics Professor Gita Gopinath has been appointed as the first woman to hold the post of Chief Economist at the IMF.

 Professor Gita Gopinath has been appointed as the Chief Economist at the International Monetary Fund by IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde. She will be the first woman to hold the position of Economic Counsellor and Director of the IMF’s Research Department. She succeeds Maurice Obstfeld who will retire at the end of 2018. Professor Gopinath will begin her term at the IMF in January 2019 taking a two year leave from her position at Havard University.

[Gita Gopinath](https://scholar.harvard.edu/gopinath) is the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and of Economics at Harvard University. Her [research](https://www.minneapolisfed.org/publications/the-region/interview-with-gita-gopinath) focuses on International Finance and Macroeconomics. She is co-director of the International Finance and Macroeconomics program at the [National Bureau of Economic Research](http://www.nber.org/programs/ifm/ifm.html), a visiting scholar at the [Federal Reserve Bank of Boston](http://www.bostonfed.org/), member of the economic advisory panel of the [Federal Reserve Bank of New York, ](https://www.newyorkfed.org/aboutthefed/ag_economic.html)Economic Adviser to the Chief Minister of Kerala state (India), co-editor of the [American Economic Review](https://www.aeaweb.org/journals/aer/about-aer/editors), co-editor of the current [Handbook of International Economics](http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/handbooks/15734404) and was managing editor of the [Review of Economic Studies](http://www.restud.com/). She also served as a member of the Eminent Persons Advisory Group on G-20 Matters for India's Ministry of Finance.
