#  Marc Melitz Receives Honorary Doctorate from the University of Buenos Aires 

 





Harvard Economics Professor Marc Melitz has been awarded an honorary Doctor Honoris Causa degree by the Faculty of Economic Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires (UBA), recognizing his influential contributions to the study of international trade.

Melitz, the David A. Wells Professor of Political Economy at Harvard, received the degree at a ceremony at UBA’s Faculty of Economic Sciences on September 15. The honor recognizes a body of research that has helped transform economists’ understanding of the relationship between firms and international trade.

One of Melitz’s most influential contributions is his 2003 paper, “The Impact of Trade on Intra-Industry Reallocations and Aggregate Industry Productivity.” The paper introduced a framework that incorporates differences among firms in productivity into models of international trade, helping economists understand why some firms export while others do not, and how international trade can affect the productivity and composition of industries.

The framework, now widely known as the Melitz model, has become a central part of modern international trade theory. It has also provided a foundation for subsequent research on how firms respond to globalization and how those responses affect aggregate economic outcomes.

During his visit to Buenos Aires, Melitz delivered a keynote lecture, “Trade and Industrial Policies,” discussing his research on the interaction between trade and industrial policy. He also participated in a research seminar at UBA on industrial policies and multistage production, including the economics of battery-powered vehicles.

The honorary degree adds to a series of recognitions for Melitz’s contributions to economics. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017 and received the Onassis Prize in International Trade in 2023.

The UBA honor recognizes Melitz’s lasting influence on the field of international trade and his contributions to economists’ understanding of firms, globalization, and the effects of trade.
