Professor Amartya Sen Receives Awards from the Governments of France and Mexico
Harvard Economics Professor Amartya Sen recently received the Legion of Honor Medal in a ceremony held at the Consulate General of France in Boston in which he was awarded the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honor on November 27, 2012. Professor Sen is being recognized for his contributions to the advancement of values and ideas such as the universality of human rights and of the democratic ideal, and for his contributions to social progress, freedom, and development. The Legion of Honor is France’s highest public decoration and was awarded to Professor Sen by Presidential decree of Nicolas Sarkozy.
Professor Sen was also recently honored by the Government of Mexico with the Medal of the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle. Consul General Daniel Hernández Joseph presented the Medal to Professor Sen in Boston on November 29, 2012 for his contributions on economics welfare and social justice in economic policy-making. The Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle is Mexico’s highest decoration awarded to foreign nationals whose work has benefited Mexico and its people.
