Harvard Economics Department Welcomes Nathaniel Hendren as Associate of the Department of Economics

Nathaniel Hendren has joined the Harvard University Department of Economics as an associate of the department.  Next year he will be a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

His appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics will begin on July 1, 2013.

Nathaniel holds a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Economics from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D in Economics from MIT.

His research to date focuses on the ways in which informational asymmetries affect the workings of markets. His job market paper studies insurance rejections, a practice whereby insurers turn away some applicants without offering them a contract. He finds empirical evidence that private information, held by the potential applicant pool, prevents insurers from offering insurance at any price. Going forward, his research interests span many topics in informational economics and public finance, including credit market distortions, optimal taxation, welfare measurement, and insurance regulation.
